With Earth Day approaching, now is a good time to explore the progress of the hotel industry towards becoming more sustainable. Today's eco-conscious travelers factor sustainability into their decisions about where to stay more than ever before. To target these guests and run a more efficient hotel, hotels are expanding their efforts to save energy and water, recycle, offer reusable bottles, provide electric vehicle charging, and so on.
In addition, hotel FF&E manufacturers across an array of categories are also taking steps to become environmentally responsible in their products and operations. Lowering carbon emissions, creating healthy hotel interiors, and reducing waste are three key areas of focus for manufacturers.
Hotel FF&E Manufacturers’ Sustainability
MindClick, through their Sustainability Assessment Program (MSAP), has created a data-driven framework with which to measure FF&E manufacturers. Both Durkan Hospitality (flooring) and Lodging Concepts Manufacturing (casegoods) have achieved Leader status. Emser Tile scored 150 out of 200 possible points in the MSAP and Renaissance Manufacturing Industries is working closely with MindClick to increase their scores.
The companies listed below are taking steps at the corporate level to be more sustainable. They are also creating more environmentally friendly products, which the infographics highlight.
• Waste Reduction: Renaissance has implemented a metal recycling program to minimize production waste, while Tempur Sealy has zero landfill waste in their US-based mattress manufacturing facilities.
• Carbon Emissions: Tempur Sealy is part of The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, along with Mohawk Group. In addition, Mohawk stands out for their Beyond Carbon Neutral program with additional 5% carbon offset for net-positive impact.
• Renewable Energy: Culp Hospitality’s Read Window division has implemented solar panels to not only produce all of its own energy, but also contribute 54,500 kW back to their local grid.
